Southwest Experience
The Southwest Experience uses Native American culture a case study of minority educational experiences. It has three major components: (1) academic instruction; (2) a practicum in a Navajo school and (3) a study tour of Southwestern Native American cultural sites. Academic instruction focuses on the dynamics of human relations, a combined with the practicum, meets the Iowa Human Relations requirements for teachers. This 2 credit summer experience meets the *Anthro 201 (3 credit hours) and the Ed 484 Human Relations requirement for elementary and secondary majors.
The study tour includes living for two weeks on the Navajo reservation and visiting Native American museums, historical sites, and towns bordering the Navajo Reservation. The practicum is a two week long teaching experience at the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Rock Point, Arizona.
